Former Congressman Bob Barr has officially announced his candidacy for President of the United States. You can find more information about him at http://www.bobbarr2008.com/ . I wonder what this will do to the dynamics of the race. Most people view a third-party candidate as a “spoiler” for one party or the other. Recent examples would be Ralph Nader syphoning support from the 2000 Al Gore campaign and Ross Perot all but derailing the 1996 Bob Dole campaign. So, what do you think, could a third-party candidate make a successful run for the presidency?

I guess, that would depend on an individuals view of success. I don’t believe, that at this time in history, that a third-party candidate could actually win the office. BUT, I believe, that it could qualify as a success if it opens the door for a winning run for a future candidate …or if the possible motives are to be a “spoiler” …they can definitely be successful in that area. I believe, that most people from our parents’ generation never thought they’d see a black man or woman have a viable run for the presidency. I can remember being told several times from my parents, teachers & adults, that I would never see a black man or woman as president in my lifetime. Well, it may very well be possible this election & though I am no spring chicken…I am not even to mid-life yet. I am a Republican, because I agree with most of what that party represents …not all. BUT, if another party were to start that came closer & I agreed with more of their views & felt their candidate would be a great leader. I feel, that I could vote independent. I think, that I’m a pretty average person, and that if I could possibly vote independent …if that perfect candidate came around ….so, could many others. I am proud to live in a country, where a black man & woman have a real chance at becoming the President. Though, the woman’s chance for this election is becoming less & less …to nearly impossible. Some people would not vote for a minority, but then you have some that will vote for Barrack, simply for his ethnic race & some that will vote for Hilary simply for her gender. I will not vote for either, because they do not represent my goals & values. It has nothing to do with the color of their skin or their gender. Either way …win or lose, they have blown the doors wide open. In my opinion, I believe that a third-party candidate could do that in the future, but not this election. I was blessed to be born in the best country in the world, even with all its faults & flaws (of course, faults & flaws equal worldly), where at least, the chance of opportunity is there. By faith, anything is possible & I know, that the grace of God is much bigger than my earthly mind can fathom …so I try to never say never. So, yes, a third-party candidate could make a successful run for the presidency …not this election, but maybe, sooner rather than later.
